CMHA has partnered with the Cincinnati-Hamilton County Community Action Agency (CAA) to provide computer training to residents living in CMHA's Millvale community. The two-year pilot program seeks to address and improve the destabilizing elements - such as having no high school diploma or an unsteady home life - that interfere with education and vocational readiness. Under the program, CAA provides basic and intermediate computer training classes in keyboarding and Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint.  The free classes are designed to teach or enhance computer literacy so that participants may improve their career opportunities.

Shirley Kennedy is a Millvale resident who recently completed the courses. She shared her perspective with CMHA.
What made you join the computer skills pilot program?
"I've always worked with computers, and I thought taking classes would make me more knowledgeable. There's always something you can learn, especially when it comes to computers."

What kinds of skills did you learn?
"I learned the Microsoft Office products - Excel, Word and PowerPoint. I was fascinated - there are so many things you can do by just hitting a button!  All you have to know is what you're looking for."
How do you hope these skills will help you in the future?
"You have to be knowledgeable about Microsoft programs in order to be marketable for jobs. I hope this will open me up to new opportunities in the job market."
You recently received a refurbished computer from CMHA. Tell us about it!
"It was unbelievable! Knowing how to use the computer is one thing, but having one in your home is even better. I plan to use it keep up with my new skills and look for jobs."
